A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who has completed advanced education (a minimum of a master's degree) and training in the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions, including chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol.
Nurse practitioners provide a broad range of health care services and
affect health care change in areas which range from Pediatrics, Family Practice, Acute Care, Psychiatry, and have an ability to maintain health promotion activities for wellness throughout the continuum of life.
NPs are privileged with the ability to furnish medications with DEA, PTAN, NPI and other professional authority. NPs provide some of the same care provided by physicians and maintain close working relationships with physicians.
Practitioners admit to hospitals, sign medical clearance forms, and can independently bill Medicare for services rendered. An NP can serve as a patient's regular primary health care provider (PCP).
